A call...I'm listening to a radio program right now. A caller is saying that he and his wife spent and donated more because they could afford to do so in order to do their part to keep the economy going, and is accusing the host of "spreading doom and gloom" by asking if people are cutting back more during this time.

I myself am not cutting back more. I didn't spend much to begin with. I'm a little bit different than many people in that I have more this year than I had in previous years. I have a better paying job, and for the first time in 12 years, I have no debt. So I had more to spend. But old habits die hard, so I didn't spend much this year because in years past I didn't have much to spend.

My mother is not doing as well financially. She got me gifts that I already had and didn't need. Because of her situation, I told her she didn't have to get me anything. She probably won't listen to me.

Can public attitudes change? Only if they're forced to. If people are spending less this year, it's because they have less. Simple as that. When they have more, they will spend more unless a very charismatic and popular person, somebody as big as Al Gore is for the global warming crowd, convinces large numbers of people to spend less, even during prosperous times.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
