Websites listing Federal Government Jobs

I promised the listeners to my KGO-AM (ABC-San Francisco) radio show that I'd post the list of websites containing federal job listings that I mentioned on tonight's show. Here they are. (I've added a few.):

To access the federal job openings, start with http://jobsearch.usajobs.gov/a9recoveryjobs.asp

Visit your favorite individual federal agency sites. The major ones can be accessed from http://dcjobsource.com/fed.html. Agencies may have special positions and recruitment programs listed only on their

site. That means you'll be competing with fewer job seekers. Also, some federal agencies, for example, the FBI, Federal Reserve, Government Accountability Office, and CIA don't have to advertise their jobs on usajobs.gov.

An even more under-the-radar source of federal jobs is www.fedbizopps.gov. It lists federal jobs, including many overseas ones (Iraq or Afghanistan, anyone?) that are filled via Personal Service Contracts.

Those jobs are less secure than government jobs but usually pay more.

Some federal agencies, for example, EPA, State, FBI, FDIC, and Treasury often fill unadvertised openings at job fairs. Some are listed at www.govcentral.com/careers/articles/1871 and at www.fedjobs.com/chat/jobfairs.html

Some private temp agencies staff federal temp positions. Some of those agencies are listed on: www.state.gov/m/dghr/flo/c21666.htm.

If you're a student, a backdoor route into a permanent government job is a federal internship. www.makingthedifference.gov lists 200 federal internship programs. Also see www.studentjobs.gov.

Where the Jobs Will Be

Heretofore, businesses sold mainly to consumers (B to B) or to other businesses (B to C.)

Under the new Obama/liberal Congress/liberal media regime, the U.S. is fast moving toward becoming a much more centrally run economy. So the largest or certainly fastest growing segment will be B-to-G: business-to-government. The federal government will be issuing large numbers of requests for proposals from private businesses.

The implications:

Government-contracting opportunities will likely be best in federal, not state or local government because the federal government can print money and has more sources of tax and fee revenues that can be increased. That's why so many states and municipalities are now joining the bailout conga line at the federal government tax-dollar trough.

2. If possible, become a woman-owned or especially a minority-owned business. That will give you priority over white-male-run businesses. So, if you are a white man, consider getting a partner who's a woman or a minority, ideally both. Here's a link to the federal goodies set aside for women. 3. If you're a job seeker, seek work at such contractors (find your local ones here by searching on your zip code) or for the federal government. The professional-level federal government job titles that are already hot and seem poised for the greatest growth: management analyst, program analyst, budget analyst, , IT management specialist, financial administrator, inspector, investigation and compliance officer.

One cautionary note: This article cites growth in government contracting but reports that profits in such businesses are often not as obscene as the public thinks.
