Should You Be a Generalist or a Specialist?

I recently debated legendary education evaluator, Michael Scriven on whether we should encourage young people to be specialists or generalists.

You're right that Scriven underestimates the extreme difficulty of achieving professional proficiency in ANY two unrelated fields. Michael Jordan, one of the greatest athletes who ever lived, was unable to master even minor-league baseball. Many people have have left distinguished careers to fail spectacularly in politics.
