When Can Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD, ADHD) Be An Asset?

My PsychologyToday.com article is on ADD/ADHD: When Can Attention Deficit Disorder Be an Asset?

While in most cases, attention-deficit disorder's distractibility, inpulsivity, and disorganization are a net negative on one's life, sometimes they're a net positive and don't require intervention. This article profiles a client of mine for whom that is the case.

I once thought I had ADHD and consulted a psychiatrist. He asked me quite a few questions and concluded that I didn't have ADHD, or at least a case that wasn't serious enough to warrant going beyond a few talk sessions. When I asked him why he came to this conclusion, he told me:

"When I suspect ADHD, I look for a consistent pattern of failures and problems with managing life. In other words, people with ADHD typically report that they did poorly and got in trouble at school and work quite often throughout their career, had relationship problems, and even had problems with addictions and brushes with the law, like a bad driving record. In your case, I see a few bumps in your life's road, but nothing that a few more sessions of us talking about how you might either avoid those bumps in the future or how you might cushion the blow of the bumps that you can't avoid."
